Product Description
NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Colorful geometric motifs ring this ashiko drum by Samuel Coleman. Crafted by hand from tweneboa wood, the drum actually belongs to the djembe family and is tuned in the same way. Its goatskin head is firmly attached with cotton-covered iron rings and nylon rope in an attractive interwoven pattern. The body of the drum is finished with oil paints and mansion polish. It can be slung over the shoulder with a hand-woven kente cloth cord and carried to the next jam session. Artisan Info: "I was born on November 24, 1974. I stayed with my mother and started schooling at the Methodist primary school in town. I then moved to where my father stays, to be with him and to continue my education. I therefore studied at the Swedru School of Business where I took General Arts as a subject. While I was there, I was very much involved in the school's cultural troupe and performed with them. Upon completion of the Swedru School, I was a bit stranded with no money to further my education at the university level. Due to my interest in all things cultural things, I then decided to get involved in artworks, especially carving - drums to be specific. I moved back with my mother and then went under a three year training period, and now I am a master training three boys in the art of drum-making."
